    Aiken Tech Update
It is coming close to the Holiday Season and ATC wanted to remind you of the new things that will be occurring with Aiken Technical College’s MSHA Program.

Beginning January 4, 2006, MSHA will be conducting weekly training classes at Aiken Tech in building 700/800 room 801. The first Wednesday of every month there will be Annual Refresher training, the second Wednesday will be New Miner Part 1, the third Wednesday will be New Miner Part 2 (first aid), and the fourth Wednesday will be New Miner Part 3. Prices are $35 per student per day (plus $5 book fee for first aid class). Company ONSITE training can, and will, be provided on a case-by-case need.

ATC would like a copy of your company’s Part 46 or 48 Training Plan prior to any student coming to class, if possible. If you need a training plan prepared, ATC can assist you in completion of one for a $150 fee.

ATC is developing an email contact list to make dissemination of information quicker and easier. Please send an email, with your company information, to busseyt@atc.edu so a connection can be created.

Prior to any training please complete the Aiken Technical College – MSHA Training Needs Survey. This is a good planning tool for us and for you.

ATC is still searching for adjunct instructors to assist in MSHA training around the state. All applicants must complete a SC State Application http://www.state.sc.us/jobs/application/stateapp9504.doc

ATC looks forward to a cooperative and more productive year in providing quality safety and health training for you and your employees.

Head of New Cooper River Bridge Project Receives Award
The man in charge of overseeing construction of the new Cooper River bridge was awarded the Order of Palmetto after the $632 million project was on budget and completed a year ahead of schedule.

Bobby Clair Jr. was engineer and director of special projects at the state Department of Transportation. He left that position in August to take a position at a private firm. He had worked for the state for 37 years.

"I never imaged I would have the opportunity to be involved with a project like the bridge, never mind being in charge it," Clair said. "The award was a surprise ... an honor,"

The eight-lane Ravenel Bridge, the longest cable-stayed bridge in North America, opened in July.

Clair recently started his new job in Charleston as vice president for the architectural firm HDR Inc.

He was nominated for the governor-awarded honor by several lawmakers including state Sens. Glenn McConnell, Charleston, and Chip Campsen, Isle of Palms.
