“Largest Mining Industry Gathering in the State of S.C.”
The Mining Association of South Carolina launched its third annual Mining Workshop on March 30 – April 1, 2009 at the Radisson Hotel & Conference Center in Columbia, SC. The theme of the third annual mining workshop was “Survivability through Sustainability” which embodies the goal of the workshop, how to manage effectively in this current economic environment. The workshop also provided quality time for the producers and suppliers of the mining industry to discuss the challenges of mining in South Carolina and celebrate the successes of mining in South Carolina. With close to 300 registered attendees and 55 exhibits, the MASC Mining Workshop was truly the “Largest Mining Industry Gathering in the State of S.C.”

Hand Receives 2009 MASC Citizenship Award
The Mining Association of South Carolina has developed an award to recognize a member employee or group of member employees whose active participation in a wide range of activities has strengthened the community and the image of the mining industry in the community. Some examples of projects that may qualify, but not limited to are: environmental improvement projects that exceed what is required by regulations (State and/or Federal), such as, creating a wildlife habitat, improving the appearance of the mine for the general public; community service projects such as, adopting a school, helping the needy, creating public walking or hiking areas, fund raising, etc.

This year’s recipient of the MASC Citizenship Award is Richard Hand, Plant Manager of Vulcan Materials, Pacolet Quarry. In the city of Pacolet there is good evidence of Richard's participation in and around the community. At the Pacolet Community Center there is a mural of Pacolet, painted on the side of the buliding that includes the rock quarry and landmarks that are associated with the quarry. Granite boulders donated by Vulcan are placed in front of the mural and used as chairs in the landscaped flower beds. There is a donated paper-mache' model of the rock quarry for display in the Pacolet Town Hall Museum and a huge granite boulder from the quarry inside the museum as well.

Richard believes that the education of the community and the participation of Vulcan Materials and the employees in the community is the key to the successful relationship enjoyed by everyone in Pacolet. Richard is dedicated to the development of the community by donating materials to local projects in the community. Total material donations in 2008 of 585 tons for various community projects. Whether it is rock boulders for beautification, crushed stone to prevent soil erosion or money to contribute to a fundraiser, Richard steps up to volunteer Vulcan's assistance in whatever area the community has a need.

    Congratulations Richard!!!

    MASC Participates in SEWE
MASC participated in the 2009 Southeastern Wildlife Exposition (SEWE) in Charleston, SC as it has for many years. MASC Members and Staff set up an Exhibit Booth in the SEWE Conservation Tent on Marion Square in Downtown Charleston, SC. Throughout the weekend MASC Members and staff work at the exhibit booth to educate SEWE Participants on Mining in South Carolina. This year several promotional items with the MASC Logo were handed out to SEWE Participants.

The Expo's estimated economic impact totals $67 million, and the Charleston tourism industry uses the event as the unofficial start of the season and a barometer for the months ahead. Between 33,000 and 35,000 people attended this year's Expo. That's about average but down from 40,000 in 2008, a peak SEWE officials attributed to pleasant weather.
