Hand Receives 2009 MASC Citizenship Award
The Mining Association of South Carolina has developed an award to recognize a member employee or group of member employees whose active participation in a wide range of activities has strengthened the community and the image of the mining industry in the community.
Some examples of projects that may qualify, but not limited to are: environmental improvement projects that exceed what is required by regulations (State and/or Federal), such as, creating a wildlife habitat, improving the appearance of the mine for the general public; community service projects such as, adopting a school, helping the needy, creating public walking or hiking areas, fund raising, etc.
This year’s recipient of the MASC Citizenship Award is Richard Hand, Plant Manager of Vulcan Materials, Pacolet Quarry. In the city of Pacolet there is good evidence of Richard's participation in and around the community. At the Pacolet Community Center there is a mural of Pacolet, painted on the side of the buliding that includes the rock quarry and landmarks that are associated with the quarry. Granite boulders donated by Vulcan are placed in front of the mural and used as chairs in the landscaped flower beds. There is a donated paper-mache' model of the rock quarry for display in the Pacolet Town Hall Museum and a huge granite boulder from the quarry inside the museum as well.
Richard believes that the education of the community and the participation of Vulcan Materials and the employees in the community is the key to the successful relationship enjoyed by everyone in Pacolet. Richard is dedicated to the development of the community by donating materials to local projects in the community. Total material donations in 2008 of 585 tons for various community projects. Whether it is rock boulders for beautification, crushed stone to prevent soil erosion or money to contribute to a fundraiser, Richard steps up to volunteer Vulcan's assistance in whatever area the community has a need.
Congratulations Richard!!!
